Apple picked an engineer to run the company right when everyone else is picking AI talkers
Tim Cook stepped down as Apple's CEO on September 1, 2026, after 15 years in the role, becoming executive chairman. John Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001 and has spent 25 years rising through hardware engineering to senior vice president, is the new CEO. Cook said Ternus "has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor." Under Cook, Apple became the world's most valuable company multiple times over and launched the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Vision Pro. Reporting on the handover frames Ternus's central mandate in two words: focus on AI.

An AI solved ten decades old math problems for the price of a laptop. Mathematicians still won't call it settled
OpenAI said on August 1, 2026 that an internal version of its next model, Astra, produced verified solutions to ten long unsolved problems in mathematics and computer science, some open for decades, for roughly $2,000 in compute. The proofs were checked by Lean, software that rejects any logical step that doesn't follow, and researchers found zero unproven gaps. Yet mathematicians who track this space call it far from settled: none of the results have been peer reviewed, and a June 2026 declaration signed by over 1,800 mathematicians warns AI-generated proofs threaten how the field verifies and credits its own work.

A court fined Meta $942 million, and the fine is the least important part of the ruling
A New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay an additional $567 million on August 7, 2026, bringing its total penalty in the state's landmark child safety case to roughly $942 million. A jury had already found in March that Meta knowingly harmed children and misled the public about it. But the money, about 1.5% of Meta's 2025 profit, is not the real story. The court also ordered Meta to redesign its products for New Mexico's minors: hidden like counts, no notifications between 10 pm and 7 am, and a 90-hour monthly usage cap. A US court just told a social media company how to build its app. That has never happened before.

AMD is paying Anthropic, to use it's chips and the payment is of $5B
On July 22, 2026, AMD and Anthropic announced a deal to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 chips, starting in 2027. The twist is who pays whom: AMD committed up to $5 billion in cash equity into Anthropic, the reverse of the warrant deals AMD struck with OpenAI and Meta, where those companies effectively got paid in AMD stock to be customers. This time, the chipmaker is buying its way into the AI lab's business, not the other way round.

China built an AI model that beats America's best and Washington called it stolen
On July 22, a senior White House official accused Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI of secretly distilling Anthropic's Fable model to build its new Kimi K3 system, marking the first time a named US official has publicly accused a specific Chinese lab of copying a specific American one. The twist: Kimi K3, at 2.8 trillion parameters the largest open-source AI model ever released, already ranks first on an independent coding benchmark, ahead of Fable 5 itself, while costing roughly a third as much to run. If it really is a copy, it is a copy that now beats the original at its own game.

India launched Semicon 2.0 to dominate the global chip market by the end of the decade
Indian government officially approved a monumental ₹1.27 lakh crore budget for its updated semiconductor mission, known as Semicon 2.0. This massive upgrade represents a major escalation from the initial program, moving past simple factory incentives to build an absolute, end-to-end silicon ecosystem. The new policy covers everything from local chip design and raw material processing to advanced university training. India is attempting to secure a dominant 10% of global chip market by the end of the decade.

In the middle of rainy, sweltering Delhi, a famous inventor is lying on a thin mattress, refusing to eat. His name is Sonam Wangchuk, the man whose life inspired the hero of the film "3 Idiots." He is now dangerously weak. He has joined a huge youth movement furious about India's broken exams, and he is also fighting for his home region, Ladakh. The government has stayed silent. The opposition is begging him to eat. Here is who he is, why he stopped eating, and what he wants.

A technology titan just terminated thousands of white collar jobs while explicitly banning its human resource teams from mentioning artificial intelligence
On Monday, July 6, 2026, tech giant Microsoft sent shockwave through the global employment market by executing a sweeping corporate layoff of forty-eight hundred employees. Yet, inside the highly confidential internal memo leaked over the last 24 hours, the Chief People Officer took the extraordinary step of explicitly ordering managers to declare that the roles were absolutely not being replaced by artificial intelligence software. This intense corporate defensiveness reveals a deep operational tension, proving that while tech conglomerates are spending billions to automate white-collar tasks, they are terrified of facing a consumer and legal backlash.

Two giant democracies are quietly building a maritime wall without signing a single military alliance
On July 7, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stood alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta to launch an unprecedented economic and security blueprint. For decades, global observers assumed that containing maritime aggression required joining top-heavy, Western-led military treaties. But this sudden pact between the two largest anchors of the Indian Ocean bypasses military alliances completely. Instead, they are locking down international trade corridors through software code and critical minerals. The sudden move leaves major global superpowers scrambling to figure out how a trade agreement could neutralize a navy.

One fitness app survived the great digital health collapse by buying old-fashioned concrete bricks
On July 7, 2026, Cult.fit officially filed its draft for a massive ₹950 crore public listing. Just a few years ago, the entire digital health startup space collapsed as consumers abandoned home workout applications to return to real-world routines. Most technology platforms burned through millions of dollars trying to force users onto digital screens, only to slide into bankruptcy. But Cult.fit pulled off a counter-intuitive survival pivot by abandoning pure software and buying up physical gym chains.

A major global regulator just stopped a nine billion pound payout because car companies fought back
Millions of car buyers in the UK were celebrating a massive victory against predatory financing. The Financial Conduct Authority had designed a historic £9.1 billion compensation scheme to pay back drivers who were overcharged on their auto loans by greedy dealers. On paper, it looked like a done deal, with individual borrowers expecting an average payout of £830 each. But in last forty-eight hours, the entire compensation engine was frozen. The real reason for this halt shows exactly how the world's largest automotive brands can use a legal lever to paralyze a government.

A secret trading corridor between local towns is quietly shielding India from a global trade collapse
Rising global shipping costs and currency fluctuations are putting immense pressure on traditional trade hubs. Yet, under the radar, India's domestic market cap just added a massive 1 lakh crore rupees in a single week across its top firms. The real secret behind this financial resilience isn't coming from major export hubs like Mumbai or Bengaluru but true engine of India's economic endurance is driven by unexpected spending power exploding inside secondary industrial cities.

India and Japan both depend on China. This week they quietly agreed to depend on it less
India hosted Japan's new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, for their 16th annual summit in New Delhi. On the surface it looked like a routine friendly meeting about trade and energy. But one idea runs through almost everything the two signed: two countries that both lean heavily on China have decided to quietly build their own alternative together, in chips, minerals, AI, defence and clean energy. Japan brings the money and technology, India brings the youth and scale. Here is what really happened, and why it matters far beyond a diplomatic photo.

Indian corporate leaders are walking directly into a multi-million job trap
Every major chief executive in India is looking at the exact same math problem right now. By deploying advanced artificial intelligence systems, individual companies can cut headcounts, spike profit margins, and boost corporate productivity by a massive 40%. On paper, it looks like an absolute no-brainer for a business leader. But a hidden trap is quietly unfolding. When every company cuts white-collar jobs at the exact same time, they systematically destroy the middle-class purchasing power that buys their products.

Why the world's biggest software company just became a services firm
On July 2, Microsoft put $2.5 billion and 6,000 engineers into a new team. These engineers will sit inside customer offices, like Unilever, and help them use AI properly. Amazon did the same thing two days earlier with $1 billion. Two AI labs did it in May. Software companies avoided this kind of hands-on work for decades. So why are all of them suddenly doing it at once? The answer shows where AI's real problem is now.

India just dropped its prices by ₹5 a litre for petrol and ₹3 a litre for diesel
Out of nowhere, Indian fuel retailers just gave commuters a massive break, slashing petrol by ₹5 a litre and diesel by ₹3 a litre. At the exact same time, commercial cooking gas cylinders dropped by ₹183.50. On paper, it looks like a sudden domestic miracle, especially since our stock markets have been suffering through a terrible six months. But if you look closely, this relief package wasn't designed in Delhi but a game being played out inside a luxury hotel room in Qatar.

SpaceX bought a $60 billion company without spending a dollar. Here is how
Last week SpaceX went public in the biggest stock-market debut in history, and its shares soared so fast it gained close to a trillion dollars in value in just days. Then it used that freshly minted stock to buy Cursor, a leading AI coding company, for $60 billion, without spending a single dollar of cash. The stock had risen by the entire price of the deal in hours of trading. The bigger surprise is why a rocket company wanted it at all.

Anthropic's most powerful AI lasted 76 hours. Then the US government shut it down
On June 9, Anthropic, one of the world's top AI companies, launched its smartest AI yet, called Fable 5. Just three days later, the US government sent a single letter and forced the company to switch it off, everywhere on earth, with only 90 minutes' notice. The official reason was a safety risk. But the real story is stranger. For years, Anthropic had warned that its own AI was dangerous, and the government simply believed it. Here is what actually happened.

One indian conglomerate rattled two different industries in a single year. It used the same playbook both times
In 2024, a conglomerate entered the paint business and grabbed nearly seven percent of the market in its first year, three times what experts predicted. Then in early 2025, it announced it was entering the cables and wires business. It had not sold a single cable yet. On that one announcement alone, five rival companies lost up to 21 percent of their stock value in a single day. The playbook is the same both times. Once you see it, you will recognise it everywhere.

Every Top AI Company Is Racing to Be Worth a Trillion Dollars. History Says Most Will Lose
OpenAI, Anthropic, and others are sprinting toward trillion-dollar valuations, together swallowing 14 percent of all the venture money raised on earth last year. The race looks unstoppable. But the last time a technology attracted money like this, in the late 1990s internet boom, the companies that built the plumbing soared and then went bankrupt, while the companies built on top of them won everything. The race may have the wrong winners.

Google asked the market for $80 billion. The market said yes but the stock fell anyway
Google earns roughly $174 billion in operating cash flow a year, and still it asked the market for money. Institutions lined up, the raise was upsized from $80 billion to $84.75 billion in 48 hours, and yet the stock fell. A company this profitable does not need outside money to operate. Raising it anyway is the signal: its AI spending has grown bigger than even Google can pay for. Berkshire Hathaway stepped in with billions to calm nerves but it didn't work. That is the tension worth unpacking.

The AI Race Has Quietly Become a Fight Over Electricity, Not Chips
The biggest US tech companies will spend over $500 billion on AI this year. India's Reliance and Adani have each announced plans worth over $100 billion. But the real bottleneck isn't money or chips. It's electricity. A single AI task can use a thousand times more power than a normal web search. A data centre takes about a year to build. Connecting it to the power grid takes five years or more. Whoever locks up the electricity first wins the AI race.
