The ocean that ends up in your kitchen

India may be the fastest-growing major economy on earth, but a surprising amount of that growth still depends on the weather. And the weather, this year, is being shaped not by anything happening in India, but by the temperature of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru, around 12,000 km away.

The simplest way to feel it is your own kitchen. The cost of the rice, dal and vegetables you will buy a few months from now is already being shaped by that distant water. The thread that connects the two runs through the monsoon.

In a normal year, steady winds push the sun-warmed surface water of the Pacific westward, toward Asia, and that warm pool helps pull moisture toward India and feed the rains. But every few years those winds weaken, and the warm water slides back east toward South America instead. This is El Niño, named by Peruvian fishermen who noticed it arriving around Christmas. When it happens, the engine that helps draw rain toward India loses power, the monsoon weakens, harvests shrink, and food gets dearer.

This year, that warm patch is heading toward one of its strongest levels ever recorded.

The numbers that frame this year:

  • India's weather office has cut its 2026 monsoon forecast to 90 percent of normal, which counts as below average.
  • Forecasters warn of a possible "super El Niño," with Pacific water more than 2 degrees above normal, among the strongest on record.

Why rain matters so much more in India

To see why a weak monsoon worries economists, you have to grasp how much of India still runs on rain. The four monsoon months fill the reservoirs that supply water and electricity, recharge the wells farmers draw from, and water the crops that feed 1.4 billion people.

When the rain is good, harvests are strong, food is cheap, and rural families have money to spend on everything from soap to scooters. When it fails, crops wither, food prices climb, and the spending power of hundreds of millions of people shrinks at once. That is why a bad monsoon is felt far beyond the farm, in factories, in showrooms, and eventually in interest rates, since food makes up nearly a third of the basket India uses to measure inflation.

What history tells us

India has lived through enough El Niño years to know the pattern. In 2002, rainfall fell about 19 percent below normal and growth fell from 6% to 4%. In 2009, it ended around 22 percent short, and food inflation climbed toward 20 percent. In 2015, a second straight weak year deepened rural distress. In 2023, El Niño gave India its driest August in over a century, and the government banned some rice exports to protect supply at home.

The most extreme case people reach for is the Great Famine of 1876 to 1878, when millions died across India. But it is worth being precise, because it was not the monsoon alone. A failed monsoon, linked to a powerful El Niño, was the trigger.

Why this time should hurt less

Here is the more hopeful part. India is far better prepared than it was in 2002 or 2009. The government is sitting on grain stocks of wheat and rice running at close to three times the required buffer, built precisely so it can release supply and hold prices down when a harvest disappoints. Reservoirs are currently above normal. Welfare schemes feed hundreds of millions cheaply, cushioning the poorest from a price shock. And officials have a ready playbook: stockpiling drought-resistant seeds, subsidising diesel for pumping water, and restricting exports of staples to keep local supply stable. None of this makes a weak monsoon painless. But it slows the speed at which a poor harvest turns into a grocery-bill crisis, which is exactly the mechanism that broke down in 2009.

The lesson India can no longer postpone

And that is where the real lesson sits. All of these defences, the grain stores, the welfare food, the export bans, treat the symptom. They help India survive a bad year. None of them fix the reason a bad year is so dangerous in the first place: that nearly half of India's farmland still drinks only rain.

That is the root, and it is solvable. The same money spent every crisis on emergency imports and subsidies could instead expand drip and sprinkler irrigation, so a dry spell no longer means a dead crop. It could push farmers from thirsty rice and sugarcane toward hardier millets and pulses that survive on less.

India has spent two decades learning to absorb this blow. The next two decades have to be about needing to absorb it less.

India can forecast El Niño months before it arrives. It still cannot stop a single field from drying. The grain in the warehouse decides whether this year hurts. The water reaching the field decides whether the next one does. India has mastered the first. The second is the work it can no longer afford to put off.
